News: Iowa bishops ask for clemency for Dustin Lee Honken
July 6, 2020
The Iowa Catholic bishops appealed to President Donald Trump late last week asking for clemency for Dustin Lee Honken, who is slated to be executed on July 17.
In a letter dated July 1, Iowa's four bishops asked that the president commute Honken's sentence as well as the sentences of the others to be executed this summer, from death to live without the possibility of parole.
"It is a duty of the state to punish offenders and defend the common good and this would still be accomplished by commuting his sentence," they said.
