The Diocese of Des Moines's main administrative building, the Catholic Pastoral Center, is in downtown Des Moines. It houses the bishop's office, most diocesan and Catholic Charities offices.

Across 6th Street to the east is the YMCA (formerly the Polk County Convention Complex) and to the north across High Street is St. Ambrose Cathedral. The Catholic Pastoral Center is a three-story, mostly black steel and glass building on National Register of Historic Places. Built by modern architecture pioneer Ludwig Mies van der Rohe, it was originally a savings and loan and still has a drive-through lane on the north side of the building. The building underwent an extensive renovation in 2017.
