Holy Family Church in Council Bluffs closes

On Jan. 3, Bishop William Joensen relegated Holy Family Church (2217 Avenue B, Council Bluffs, IA 51501), a worship site of Corpus Christi Parish (3304 4^th Ave, Council Bluffs, IA 51501), to profane but not sordid use, so that the potential proceeds of the sale of the church building might be used to fund the ministries of the parish of Corpus Christi, including the educational ministry of St. Albert Catholic School.

This relegation is a decision of canonical governance, by which Bishop Joensen has granted permission for the Holy Family Church to be used for non-sacred purposes. Ordinarily churches are meant to be exclusively and perpetually used for worship, and so without relegation it can not be returned to profane, or non-sacred use.
