One simple yes

A little more than 10 years ago, Father Ray McHenry was a pastor juggling the many responsibilities a pastor does when Dr. Jim “Doc” Blessman walked through his door.
"Come to South Africa with me and bring some parishioners," Doc said. "We’re doing some good work that aligns with the Corporal Works of Mercy (feed the hungry, give drink to the thirsty, clothe the naked …). And while doing that, we’re going to pray with people, worship with people, and share the good news that all of God’s children are loved," he said.
Father Ray wasn’t too sure about this. Doc was making a cold call and Father Ray didn’t really know him. He looked at his schedule. Weddings. Baptisms. First Communion. Confirmation. Major parish events.
"Look Doc," Father Ray said. "The only week I have available is this one here, in January."
"Great," said Doc. "It’s booked."
Wide eyed, Father realized he may have just agreed to go to South Africa.
It’s amazing what happens when one says “Yes.” Father Ray just concluded his 10th annual mission trip, taking probably close to 1,000 people on a life-changing journey to one of the poorest areas of the world.
One can’t go on such a trip and come back unchanged. But in a busy life, how does one say “yes” to opportunities the Spirit presents to us? I suspect the 10 of us on the most recent trip are asking ourselves that very question. Do we have the courage Father Ray had to say “yes”?
