The month of June has been connected to the Sacred Heart of Jesus since June 1674 when Jesus appeared to St. Margaret Mary in France and revealed to her His Sacred Heart, which she described as " “more dazzling than the sun and transparent as crystal.”

This year the Solemnity of the Sacred Heart of Jesus will be held on June 7 (a First Friday) but the celebration of His Sacred Heart can last all month long.

Display an Image of the Sacred Heart

Find an image of the Sacred Heart of Jesus to display in your home and office. You can also go a step further and instead of displaying the image have it enthroned. Steps to enthronement involves a blessing and consecration prayer, preferably by your parish priest.

First Friday Devotion

“I promise you, in the excessive mercy of my Heart that my all powerful love will grant to all those who receive Holy Communion on the first Friday for nine consecutive months, the grace of final repentance; they shall not die in my disgrace nor without receiving the sacraments; my divine Heart shall be their safe refuge in that last moment.” — Our Lord to St. Margaret Mary

Commit to the First Friday Devotion by receiving Holy Communion on the First Friday of the month for nine consecutive months in honor of and reparation to His Sacred Heart.

Pray to the Sacred Heart Daily

Start each day with a simple prayer to the Sacred Heart of Jesus. This can be the morning offering prayer or a single sentence like the prayers below.

  • “Sacred Heart of Jesus, I trust in you.”
  • “Sacred Heart of Jesus, make my heart like yours.”
  • "Sacred Heart of Jesus, I believe in your love for me."
  • "Most Sacred Heart of Jesus, grant that I may love you more and more."
  • "Sacred Heart of Jesus, have mercy on us."

Seek out the Sacred Heart

Make a visit to a parish or chapel dedicated to the Sacred Heart! Across the Diocese of Des Moines there are four Sacred Heart parishes in Bedford, Chariton, West Des Moines, and Woodbine. How many can you visit?

Share the Love of the Sacred Heart

The Sacred Heart of Jesus burns with love for humanity. Share that love this month through words and acts of kindness.

  • Write a short note to a friend or family member
  • Reach out to say "hey" to someone on the phone
  • Make plans to see a friend you haven't seen in awhile
  • Give a compliment every week (or day!)
  • Choose a new person to pray for each morning
  • Introduce yourself to someone new at Mass

Get Involved in the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage

Celebrate and share the love of the Sacred Heart of Jesus by attending a Eucharistic Procession or Holy Hour with the National Eucharistic Pilgrimage. There will be processions and Holy Hours in Council Bluffs, Glenwood, Imogene, and Shenandoah.

Consecrate yourself to the Sacred Heart

Unite yourself to the Sacred Heart of Jesus using St. Margaret Mary’s prayer of consecration.

O Sacred Heart of Jesus, to Thee I consecrate and offer up my person and my life, my actions, trials, and sufferings, that my entire being may henceforth only be employed in loving, honoring and glorifying Thee. This is my irrevocable will, to belong entirely to Thee, and to do all for Thy love, renouncing with my whole heart all that can displease Thee.

I take Thee, O Sacred Heart, for the sole object of my love, the protection of my life, the pledge of my salvation, the remedy of my frailty and inconstancy, the reparation for all the defects of my life, and my secure refuge at the hour of my death. Be Thou, O Most Merciful Heart, my justification before God Thy Father, and screen me from His anger which I have so justly merited. I fear all from my own weakness and malice, but placing my entire confidence in Thee, O Heart of Love, I hope all from Thine infinite Goodness. Annihilate in me all that can displease or resist Thee. Imprint Thy pure love so deeply in my heart that I may never forget Thee or be separated from Thee.

I beseech Thee, through Thine infinite Goodness, grant that my name be engraved upon Thy Heart, for in this I place all my happiness and all my glory, to live and to die as one of Thy devoted servants.  Amen.
