Dowling Catholic High School in West Des Moines has been nationally recognized for its work toward improving teaching skills and student performance.

The high school was recognized as a Model Professional Learning Community (PLC) at Work® by Solution Tree, the first Catholic high school in the country to earn this designation. Dowling Catholic's journey began in 2016.

Model PLC at Work® schools say the key to improved student learning is ongoing, job-embedded education for the adults serving those students. Only one in about 200 schools and districts throughout the United States and Canada receives this recognition.

The achievement places Dowling Catholic among just 19 schools and six school districts in Iowa with this distinction and only the fourth high school in Iowa to achieve this honor.

For over 20 years, Solution Tree resources have helped K–12 teachers and administrators create schools where all children succeed by implementing a specific work process for Professional Learning Communities. Schools are evaluated on strict criteria, including a demonstrated commitment to the PLC process, implementation of these concepts for at least three years, and clear evidence of improved student learning.

Once these measurable results are observed, schools detail their practices, structures, and culture to the PLC Review Committee. According to the Champions of PLC at Work®, schools selected for this honor have shown a "sustained commitment to helping all of their students achieve at high levels" and have been willing to adapt their organizational structure and culture to reflect this commitment.

This commitment has significantly improved student learning and achievement, providing reassurance and confidence in the school's educational practices.

Dowling Catholic is the second school in Des Moines to receive this honor. In 2022, Holy Trinity received Model PLC at Work designation.

The Diocese of Des Moines is actively pursuing district-wide Model PLC at Work® designation for all 16 of its schools. A complete list of Model PLC at Work® schools is available at allthingsplc.info. This site, maintained by Solution Tree, allows Model PLC schools to share implementation strategies, structures and performance metrics with other educators interested in improving their schools.
