WNBA star Caitlyn Clark gives back to students

Caitlin Clark, renowned for her outstanding achievements on the basketball court, continues to inspire with her commitment to giving back to her community through the Caitlin Clark Foundation. The foundation's mission is to uplift and empower youth and their communities by focusing on education, nutrition, and sports—three pillars Clark credits as crucial to her success.

As part of its "Back-to-School Backpacks" initiative, the foundation donated 350 backpacks filled with essential school supplies to students across Iowa, including 50 from the Diocese of Des Moines. The initiative was supported by her generous sponsors: Nike provided the backpacks, Hy-Vee donated the school supplies, and Gatorade added a water bottle to each bag. The event on August 2 was made even more memorable by a surprise visit from Clark herself, adding a personal touch to the donations.

Clark earned national attention while on the University of Iowa's Women's Basketball team for her exceptional scoring ability, court vision and leadership. As a dynamic guard, she consistently delivered impressive performances, setting records and earning numerous accolades, including multiple All-American honors. Clark continues to shine as a professional player on the Indiana Fever, bringing her remarkable skills and competitive spirit to the league. Her transition to the WNBA has been marked by significant contributions to her team, solidifying her reputation as one of the most promising young talents in women's basketball.

A proud alumna of St. Francis of Assisi and Dowling Catholic schools, Clark achieved success as a standout student, athlete and leader. Clark's mother, Anne Nizzi-Clark, credits her commitment to helping others to the values instilled in her during her time at the Diocese of Des Moines schools. "Catholic education above all has given our children the courage to keep learning, to keep practicing their faith, to accept the sacrifice, and the wisdom to use the gifts they are given," shared Nizzi-Clark.

Clark's journey from a Diocese of Des Moines student to a renowned athlete and philanthropist is a source of inspiration for students. Her story demonstrates that success stems not only from talent but also from hard work, perseverance and dedication. This generosity of her foundation symbolizes the importance of community support and the power of giving back. It underscores the integral role that successful alumni like Clark can play in shaping the futures of current students, making them feel valued and supported. Her achievements are not just hers alone but are celebrated by the entire community.

Donna Bishop, superintendent of Catholic schools, praised Clark's commitment and the example she sets for students. "If you want to be like Caitlin Clark, you have to go above and beyond, put in extra time and extra effort, just like Caitlin did in the classroom and on the basketball court," Bishop stated. "Her self-discipline and dedication, along with a lot of God-given talent, are allowing her to experience her success today. She will always have that '6th player' on the court with her!"
