Bishop: Triduum/Easter message to the faithful

Dear Friends in Christ,
The Master washes feet, initiates the Eucharist and the priests who will offer it, then ascends the cross and enters into the sleep of death. In what we hope is a never-ever-again repeated Lent and Triduum, we look for signs of Easter. We seek peace and the Spirit of mercy Jesus breathes to quiet our fears, augment our faith, and seal the bond of charity among us.
Mary surely had an intuition that Jesus’ death was not God’s curtain call. Many of you have shared with me your belief that God is mysteriously at work in these COVID-19 days in ways that only time will reveal, and which will transform our Church. The Spirit of God kindles hunger for Jesus and his word and advocates for those whose lives have been sorely impacted. We can compose a new chapter in the proclamation of the Gospel to the ends of the earth. Amen! Alleluia!
Easter joy is embraced in the many ways our living Church has adapted to new challenges and frontiers: Sunday Mass is celebrated by our faithful priests and is streamed for remote participation, complemented by the spiritual guidance and daily reflections they offer. Catholic schools and faith formation proceed in virtual classrooms with home-based assignments. Parish ministries in your community and across the Des Moines Diocese are still active; meals continue to be prepared and delivered to those in need, while many existing service agencies, including Catholic Charities, are more vital than ever.
While we navigate these unprecedented times, I join your local pastors in requesting that you continue your financial support to your parish as you are able by mailing your weekly contributions to your parish and to the Annual Diocesan Appeal. You may also enlist technology to (1) sign-up to complete online giving to your parish or school through the drop down menu (be assured that the full amount of all tithes is sent back to your parish; and (2) consider the Diocese of Des Moines COVID-19 Relief Fund, which I want to briefly describe to you.
In partnership with Catholic Charities and the Catholic Foundation of Southwest Iowa, this Relief Fund will provide immediate assistance to the most vulnerable individuals and families in our faith communities. The Fund will also address the most pressing needs in our Catholic parishes and schools. Perhaps you or someone you know will receive this assistance in the weeks and months ahead. But if God has seen fit to allow you to remain secure in your basic resources during this crisis or continue to prosper, the Relief Fund offers you a concrete way to be neighbor to someone in need. Maybe you’ll even want to consider directing a portion of any government assistance check you receive toward this Fund, as many of us will.
May the peace of the Risen Christ abide in your hearts throughout the Easter Season, freeing you to cast all your cares on him, and to praise him without ceasing.

El Maestro lava los pies, instituye la Eucaristía y a los sacerdotes que la van a ofrecer, luego asciende a la cruz y entra en el sueño de la muerte. En lo que esperamos que se una Cuaresma y Triduo que nunca volvamos a ver, buscamos las señales de la Pascua. Buscamos la paz y el Espíritu de misericordia que Jesús respira sobre nosotros para calmar nuestros temores, aumentar nuestra fe y sellar el lazo de caridad entre nosotros.
María seguramente tenía una intuición de que la muerte de Jesús no era el final del plan de Dios. Muchos de ustedes han compartido conmigo que creen que Dios está trabajando misteriosamente en estos días del COVID-19 en formas que solamente el tiempo revelará y que transformará a nuestra Iglesia. Podremos componer un nuevo capítulo en la proclamación del Evangelio a todos los rincones de la tierra. ¡Amén! ¡Aleluya!
Nosotros acogemos el gozo de la Pascua en las múltiples formas en que nuestra Iglesia viviente se ha adaptado a los nuevos retos y a las nuevas fronteras: la Misa Dominical la celebran nuestros fieles sacerdotes y se transmite para participación remota, complementada por la guía espiritual y las reflexiones diarias que ofrecen. Las escuelas católicas y la formación de fe continúan en salones virtuales con tareas mientras están en casa. Los ministerios parroquiales en su comunidad y alrededor de la Diócesis de Des Moines continúan activos: se siguen preparando y llevando comidas a aquellos que lo necesitan, a la vez que muchas agencias de servicios disponibles, incluyendo Catholic Charities (Caridades Católicas), son más vitales que nunca.
Al navegar en estos tiempos sin precedentes, me uno a los párrocos locales solicitándoles que sigan apoyando financieramente a su parroquia dentro de sus posibilidades enviando por correo sus contribuciones semanales y a la Colecta Anual Diocesana. También pueden utilizar la tecnología apara (1) inscribirse para enviar donativos en línea a su parroquia o escuela seleccionando desde el menú (tengan por seguro que la cantidad total de todos los donativos se enviará a su parroquia; y (2) consideren donar al Fondo de Asistencia de la Diócesis de Des Moines para el COVID-19, el cual les quiero describir brevemente.
En Sociedad con Caridades Católicas y la Fundación Católica para el Suroeste de Iowa, este Fondo de Asistencia ofrecerá ayuda inmediata a los individuos y a las familias más vulnerables en nuestras comunidades de fe. El Fondo también atenderá las necesidades más críticas de nuestras parroquias y escuelas católicas. Probablemente usted o alguien a quien usted conoce recibirá esta asistencia en las próximas semanas o meses. Pero si Dios les ha concedido el mantener sus recursos básicos durante esta crisis o continúa prosperando, el Fondo de Asistencia le ofrece una forma concreta de ser el prójimo de alguien que lo necesita. Probablemente usted pueda incluso considerar el enviar a este Fondo una porción de algún cheque de asistencia que reciba del gobierno, como lo haremos muchos de nosotros.
Que la paz de Cristo Resucitado habite en sus corazones durante toda la Temporada Pascual, liberándoles a que pongan todas sus preocupaciones en él y a alabarle sin cesar.
